Another “Gospel”: The Social Gospel

Not to be confused with Carnegie’s “Gospel of Wealth,” the term “social gospel” was coined by Charles Oliver Brown in 1910. Some Protestants of the era articulated their social goals as the following:

“The great ends of the church are the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.”

Dismayed by poverty and urban slums, activists in the Social Gospel movement hoped that by promoting public health and education, the moral lives of the poor would begin to improve. Social Gospel activists also worked to abolish child labor and hoped to limit the number of hours employees could be required to work.
